Last week at Zebra English club, we have been learning lots of new English!
In the kids' class, Yoshifumi, Konomi and Takuto learned about tasting words- bitter, salty, sweet, sour, spicy and savoury! Then we played a guessing game using other describing words that we learned before!
Konomi's food was sour, yellow and small. What was it? It was a lemon!
Yoshifumi's food was sweet, yellow and long. What was it? It was a banana!
Takuto's food was round, sour and red. What was it? It was a tomato!
We also played a new card game, teaching everyone how to ask for something in English:"Do you have a ...?"
Next, in the Adult class, Junko san and I were talking about the differences between American English and British English. It is very difficult, but Junko san understood very well! We also started learning and revising some phrasal nouns, such as "pass out", "take out", "run out", "pull out", "hand out", etc. Her English is becoming great!

先週の授業ではたくさんの新しい言葉を学びましたよ！
小学生クラスではよしふみ君、このみちゃん、タクト君は「苦い」、「しょっぱい」、「甘い」、「酸っぱい」、「辛い、ピリッとする」など味覚の表現を学びました！みんながどんな食べ物カードを持っているのかを以前覚えた言葉とは違う表現で謎解きゲームをしました。
このみちゃんの持っている食べ物は酸っぱくて、黄色くて小さいです。さて何でしょう？そうです。レモンですね！よしふみ君の持っている食べ物は甘くて黄色くて、長いです。さて何でしょう？そうですね、バナナです！タクト君の持っている食べ物は、丸くて、酸っぱくて赤いです。さあ何でしょう？もう分かりましたね。そうです、トマトです！
私たちは新しいカードゲームでも遊びました。ゲームでは、「あなたは～を持っていますか？」という表現をみんなで使いながら楽しみましたよ！
大人クラスでは、じゅんこさんとアメリカの英語とイギリスの英語の違いについてお話しました。とても難しいことなのですが、じゅんこさんはよく理解してくれました！また、私たちは「卒業する」、「持ち出す」、「尽きる」、「出ていく」、「配る」というようないくつかの言葉の用法を確認しました。じゅんこさんの英語はますます上達しています！

Last week at Zebra English Club's Elementary school class we used describing words, using "I am..." and "I have...". Konomi has long dark brown hair. Peter has short light brown hair. Takuto is strong. Hajime is fast. Yoshifumi is clever! Can you describe yourself?
After we practiced describing ourselves, we pretended that we were animals, and the other people in the class had to guess what we were by listening to our descriptions. What is brown, big, strong, fast, and has four legs and a long neck? A horse of course!

For the Adult class, Junko san and I talked about a story that was in the news. A cat survived a 16 kilometer journey on the roof of a car! We read about the story, and learned some new vocabulary.

先週の小学生クラスでは、「私は...」や「私は...をもっています」という英語を学習しました。このみちゃんは長い茶色の髪です。ピーターは短くて少し明るい茶色の髪です。たくと君は強くて、はじめ君は速いです。よしふみ君は賢いです！みなさんは自分の説明ができますか？その後に私たちは動物のマネをしてその動物は何かを当ててもらう練習をしました。茶色くて、強く速く、４本の脚と長い首をもっている動物は何でしょう？そう。もちろん馬ですね！みんなよくできていましたよ！
大人クラスでは、じゅんこさんと私は過去のニュースについて話しました。一匹の猫が自動車の屋根に乗ったまま16㎞もの旅をしたニュースです。私たちはこの記事を読んで、新しい言葉を学習しましたよ。とても楽しいレッスンでした。今週の金曜日にまたお会いしましょう。

At Zebra last Friday we had a fun time describing animals in the elementary school class. Which animals are tall? Which animals are short? Which are scary, friendly, fat, fast, slow, etc? How many legs does a Giraffe have?
Once we learned all the words, we played a game. Each person had an animal and we had to guess which animal it was by asking them questions. If the person asking the question could guess the animal correctly, he kept the animal. Whoever has the most animals at the end of the game wins!
Everyone is also getting super fast at guessing actions, and introducing themselves. Friday's winner was Yoshifumi, but everyone was very quick, including Hajime. Let's keep it up!
For the adult class, I talked with Junko san about my trip back to England and showed her some photos. She had been to some of the same places that I had, so we talked about that too!

先週の小学生クラスでは、英語で動物の説明をしました。背の高い動物はどれですか？低い動物は？こわいのは？親しみやすいのは？太っているのは？速いのは？遅いのは？など色んな質問をしました。キリンの脚は何本ですか？
一度これらの言葉を覚えた後、私たちはゲームをしました。それぞれ１枚の動物カードを選んで、覚えた英語でお互いの動物を質問して当てなければなりません。もし質問でその動物を言い当てることができたらその動物カードを取っておくことができます。一番多くの動物カードを持っていた人が勝ちなのです！みんなとても早く当てていて、自分の持っている動物カードの説明も早く言えましたよ。先週の優勝はよしふみ君でした。先週のゲームはみんなとても早かったです。先週から仲間に加わったはじめ君も早かったですよ。この調子で頑張っていきましょう！
大人のクラスでは、じゅんこさんとこの前私がイギリスに帰ったお話とじゅんこさんが持ってきた写真を数枚見せてもらいました。じゅんこさんがこれまで行ったことがあるところに、私も行ったことがあったので、その話で盛り上がりましたよ。

I hope that everyone has had a fine winter holiday. Certainly, everyone at Zebra English Club was happy to be back and learning English. We also have a new Student, Hajime! He is Takuto's friend, and they also play basketball together at the Zebra Basketball club. Welcome to the English club, we hope you have fun!
Because of the winter break, we began this year by remembering what we learned last year through playing games. We did the introductions race and the flashcard race. You must say your introductions as fast as possible, and then say what is on the flash card as fast as possible. Hajime won the Flashcard round! Well done!
Because I had been to England, I also brought back some small badges as a little present to each Zebra student. I hope you like them!

新年あけましておめでとうございます！
みんな充実した冬休みを過ごしたことと思います。またみんなの笑顔に出会えて一緒に英語を学べることができてとても嬉しいです。そしてもっと嬉しいことは、新しいお友達のはじめ君が仲間に加わったことです！はじめ君はたくと君のお友達でゼブラバスケットボールクラブに一緒に通っています。ゼブラ英会話クラブにようこそ！一緒に楽しみましょうね！
授業では、まず去年勉強したことはこのお休みの間に忘れてしまっているかもしれないので、ゲームを通して去年の復習を行いましたよ。私たちは自己紹介のレースとフラッシュカードのレースをしました。このゲームでは自己紹介を英語で出来る限り速く言わなければなりません。そして、どんどん替わるフラッシュカードに書かれている単語も速く言わなければなりません。そして、なんと、今回優勝したのははじめ君でした！とてもよくできましたね！
私は冬休みにイギリスに里帰りをしていたので、その時に買った小さな缶バッジをみんなにプレゼントしました。喜んでもらえたら嬉しいな！

Last Friday at Zebra we had a special Christmas class!To start, all three students had to do an introduction race and a verb race,where they must introduce themselves and say what the verb flash cards are as fast as they can. Yoshifumi and Takuto both got 74 seconds, which is super fast! But Konomi just beat them with 71 seconds! Amazing!
After this we made Christmas cards to give to our families; we chose the Christmas picture (after saying what it was in English), then cut it out and stuck it to the card. Then we wrote "Merry Christmas!" on it. All the cards looked very beautiful!
In the adult class, Junko san brought some material that she uses to learn English at home. She also told me about Miyazawa Kenji, author of "Night on the Galactic Railroad". It was a very interesting talk and she knew a lot about the author's life. I enjoyed it very much.
This is the last Zebra English Club until January 13th, so I wish everyone avery merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous new year. I will see you at the first English club in January!

先週の金曜日はクリスマスの特別授業でした！
まず３人は自己紹介レースと動詞のレースをしました。そこでは、自己紹介と動詞のフラッシュカードを英語できる限り速く言わなければなりません。よしふみ君とたくと君は２人とも74秒でとても速かったのですが、なんと、このみちゃんは71秒という記録を叩き出しました！すごい！
その後はみんなで家族にプレゼントをするクリスマスカードを作りました。自分の好きなクリスマスの絵を選び、 (その絵を英語で言ったあとに、)切り取ってクリスマスカードにくっつけました。そしてカードに"Merry Christmas!"と書きましたよ。みんなとても綺麗にできましたね！
大人クラスではじゅんこさんが家で英語学習に使っている教材を持ってきてくれました。そして、『銀河鉄道の夜』の作者、宮沢賢治について話してくれました。じゅんこさんのお話はとても興味深く、宮沢賢治についてたくさんのことを知っていました。とても楽しかったです。
これが今年最後の授業となります。皆さん、よいお年をお迎え下さい。

先週で年内の授業は終わりました。小学生クラスでは新たにたくと君が加わり、ますますにぎやかなクラスになりました。このみちゃんもよしふみ君も最初はドキドキしながら(おそるおそる？)たくと君の様子を伺っていましたが、あっという間にたくと君をよしふみ＆このみワールドに引きずりこんでいました(笑)。３人はお互いに協力し合い、ときには競い合い、とてもよい関係を築きながら楽しく語学力を伸ばしていくことでしょう。
引き続き新しいお友達をお待ちしています。どうぞお気軽にお問い合わせ下さい。
一方、大人クラスはこちらをお読み頂いている方はご存じの通り、現在じゅんこさんが唯一の生徒さんです。今のところマンツーマンでの授業を行っています。じゅんこさんしかいないことをいいことに、私も一緒になって英語を学んでいます(じゅんこさんごめんなさい)。興味のある方はお気軽に教室を覗いてみて下さいね。
また、大人クラスではお仕事や家事などでお時間のない方のために、Skypeを活用したオンライン授業を計画中です。改めてこちらでもご案内しますのでよろしくお願いいたします。

Last week at Zebra we had a new student, Takuto! Welcome to Zebra English Club, Takuto!
In his first lesson, Takuto showed me what he already knew in English. He knew a lot of words already, so he can talk with Konomi and Yoshifumi very well. To help him settle in, Yoshifumi and Konomi both showed Takuto what they could say in English. Then we had an introductions race. Who answered their introductions the quickest? It was a tie! Yoshifumi and Takuto both took 39 seconds!Well done everyone!
In the adult class, Junko san and I were talking about how she practices English when away from class. She uses radio and television programs, as well as reading books. Then she comes to Zebra every Friday to talk about it and practice English.
We also talked about the news, including the new planet many lightyears away!
This Friday is the last Zebra class before the winter holiday, we will come back on Friday the 13th January. I look forward to seeing everyone then!

先週のゼブラでは新しいお友達のたくと君が来てくれました！ゼブラ英語クラブへようこそ、たくと君！最初の授業ではたくと君がどれくらい英語を知っているのか見せてもらいました。たくと君ははすでにたくさんの単語を知っていたのでこのみちゃんとよしふみ君と一緒に上手にお話しすることができましたよ。まだ慣れていないたくと君を安心させてあげようとよしふみ君とこのみちゃんは英語でどんな単語が言えるのかお手本を示してくれました。そして私たちは授業の最初に競争をしました(誰が一番速くピーター先生の質問に英語で答えられるのかを競い合うゲームです)。誰が一番速かったと思いますか？なんと、よしふみ君とたくと君はともに39秒でした！２人とも１位です！みんなよくできましたね！
その後の大人クラスでは、授業のない日の英語の学習方法について話しました。じゅんこさんは英語の本を読むのはもちろん、ラジオやテレビ番組で英語を学習しているそうです。そして毎週金曜日にゼブラでそのことについて話しています。また、私たちは遥か彼方にある新しい惑星のニュースについても話しました。
今週16日(金)のレッスンが年内最後の授業となります。年明け最初の授業は、1月13日(金)からです。みなさんとお会いできる事を楽しみにしていますよ！

We were adding a lot more 'doing words' to Yoshifumi's vocabulary in Friday's Zebra English Club. He can now say "eating", "drinking", "sleeping", as well as all the other 'doing words' that he learned recently. Well done!
We also talked about the home. How many rooms does your house have? My house has 4 rooms. Yoshifumi learned to say kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room all in English, and he learned about furniture too! We had fun saying "lamp" (with a loud 'p'), but most impressive of all is that Yoshifumi could say "refrigerator" with very little practice. Excellent Yoshifumi!
I'm really looking forward to the next class!

金曜日の授業では、よしふみ君は新しい動作の単語をたくさん覚えましたよ。よしふみ君は最近習った単語と同じように"食べている""飲んでいる""寝ている"と言うことができます。よくできましたね！また、私たちはあなたの家に部屋はいくつありますか？私の家には4つ部屋があります。など、家についても話しました。よしふみ君は"台所""お風呂""寝室"、居間を英語で勉強しました。家具についても英語で言えるようになりましたよ！また私たちは"ランプ"("P"の発音を大声で)を楽しみながら学びましたよ。でも先週の授業の中で一番印象に残った出来事はほんの少しの練習だけでよしふみ君が英語で"冷蔵庫"を言えるようになったことです。とても素晴らしかったですよ、よしふみ君！
それでは次回もゼブラ英会話クラブでお会いできることを楽しみにしています！

Last week at Zebra Yoshifumi and Konomi were remembering about parts of their body. We played a fun game! I said the body part, and the first person to point to the correct part of their body got a point! Both Yoshifumi and Konomi became very quick doing this.
After the game, we also learned new words, and what they looked like. We now know about 'reading', 'writing', 'looking', 'listening', as well as all the other verbs we learned before. Well done!
Finally, I asked Konomi and Yoshifumi what I had in my bag. They told me that I had a watch, a wallet, a cell phone, a pen, a pencil, headphones and a lot of books in my bag, in perfect English. Great work!
For the adult class, Junko san and I talked about the changing weather and keeping warm. We also talked about the economy, and debated whether we should save for more troubled times or keep spending to help the shops stay open. It is interesting as always, Junko san!

先週のゼブラでは、よしふみ君とこのみちゃんは身体の部分についてしっかりと覚えていました。そしておもしろいゲームもしましたよ！
私が身体のある部分を英語で言うと、2人は英語で私が言った身体の部分を指します。最初にその部分を指した人が点数をもらえるゲームです。よしふみ君とこのみちゃんはとても速くできるようになりましたよ！ゲームの後には、新しい単語を勉強しました。私たちは以前勉強した他の動詞と同じように'聴いて'、'見て'、'書いて'、'読んで'という動詞を覚えましたよ。よくできましたね!
授業の最後では、私がバッグに何を持っているのかをこのみちゃんとよしふみ君に尋ねました。彼らは、私がバッグに腕時計、財布、携帯電話、ペン、鉛筆、ヘッドホン、そしてたくさんの本を持っていたと、しっかりと英語で言ってくれました。すごいですね！
大人クラスでは、ジュンコさんと変わりやすい天気と防寒対策ついてお話しましたよ。また、私たちは経済についても意見を出し合いました。経済がこれからもっと混乱した時のために節約しておいた方がよいのか、それともお店などが潰れてしまわないように消費を続けた方がよいのかについて話しましたよ。ジュンコさんとのお話はいつも面白いです！

Yoshifumi and Konomi are starting to learn a lot of "doing words" at Zebra English Club. They already know 'do', 'have' and 'am/are/is', but now they can say words such as running, climbing, reading, writing, sleeping, listening, jumping, swimming and flying! How do they learn so many words so quickly?
We learn these words by playing a game. I do an action (like sleep) and tell them what the action's word is. Then, during the class, I suddenly do the action and Konomi or Yoshifumi must shout out the word quickly. Whoever says it first wins a point! It is very fun to play and Yoshifumi and Konomi word very hard to be first every time. Well done!
I wonder what new words we will learn this week?
In the Adult Class, Junko san came and we had another very long discussion. This week, it was about success. What makes a successful person? Is it happiness? Is it Education? Is it to have a family and a lot of friends, or is it to be rich and powerful? We both thought that success is a balance of all of these things.
We also talked about why next year will be a much better year, and Junko san and I both have made a lot of plans for next year already!

よしふみ君とこのみちゃんはゼブラ英会話クラブでたくさんの動作の言葉を学んでいます。
彼らはすでに'do'や'have'、'am/are/is'という言葉も覚えましたが、走って、登って、読んで、書いて、眠って、聴いて、ジャンプして、泳いで、飛んでなどの言葉も言えます！ 彼らはどのようにこんなにたくさんの言葉を短時間で覚えることができたのでしょうか？
私たちは、ゲームでこれらの単語を学びます。私が仕草(寝ているような)をして、その仕草の言葉を彼らに答えてもらいます。レッスン中、私は突然それらの仕草をするのです。そしてこのみちゃんかよしふみ君がすばやく私の仕草を大声で言わなければなりません。それを最初に言った人がポイントをとるゲームです！とても楽しくゲームをしています。そしてよしふみ君とこのみちゃんは１位の座をめぐり毎回激しくなっています。よく頑張っていますね！私たちは今週どんな新しい単語を学ぶのでしょうか？
大人クラスでは、ジュンコさんが来ましたよ。そして、私たちはとても長い時間議論をしました。 今週のテーマは「成功」についてでした。どのようにすれば成功を収めることが出来るのでしょうか？それは幸福ですか？ それは教育ですか? それとも家族や多くの友人がいることなのでしょうか？それは豊かさと力強さでしょうか？ 私たちは「成功」するためにはこれらすべてのバランスが大切であるという結論に達しました。そして、私たちは来年が今年よりももっと良い年になる理由についても話しましたよ。ジュンコさんも私も来年の計画をたくさん立てましたよ！

We had Halloween fun at Zebra last Friday! In the elementary school class we played fun games. I showed numbers and colors to Yoshifumi and Konomi and then asked them about them, for example "Is this five?" "is the color blue?". If it was correct, they would say "yes, it is." If it was incorrect they would say "no it is not." And then tell me what the correct answer was. It was a very good game, and they are learning a lot!
We also learned about Halloween monsters and objects, such as a ghost, a pumpkin, a spider web, etc. Then we practiced "I am" and "you are", by saying things like "I am a black cat" and "you are a pumpkin". It was silly, but very fun!
In the adult class, Junko san and I talked about the human population of the world. We have reached 7 billion people! We talked about what is good because of so many people living on the planet, and how can we solve the problems that overpopulation causes. It was a very interesting debate.
Junko san also told me about how she started swimming 2 years ago. She says she isn't very good, but she practices almost every day. I think she must be very good at swimming!
I will see everyone again this Friday 4th November at Zebra!

私たちは先週の金曜日にハロウィンで楽しみましたよ! 小学校クラスではおもしろいゲームをしました。 私は、数と色をよしふみ君とこのみちゃんに見せて、例えば、「これは5ですか?」「これは(この数字は)青いですか？」と尋ねました。それが正しいなら、「はい、そうです」。それが間違っていたら、「いいえ、違います」と言ってくれます。そして、私が示した番号と色が違っていたら正しい数字と色を私に教えてくれました。とても良いゲームでしたよ。彼らは色んなことを学んでいますよ!
私たちは幽霊やかぼちゃ、クモの巣などハロウィンに登場するおばけなどについても学びました。 そして、「私は黒猫です」や「あなたはかぼちゃです」など、「私は～です」や「あなたは～です」という英語を練習しました。遊びながら学習しましたがとてもおもしろかったですよ!
大人クラスでは、ジュンコさんと世界の人口について話しました。世界の人口は70億人に到達しました! そして私たちは地球で暮らしている人々のためにどうすれば良いのかについて話しました。そして、どのようにしたら人口の増加が引き起こす問題を解決できるのかなどとても興味深いお話ができました。
また、ジュンコさんは2年前に水泳を始めたきっかけを私に話してくれました。 彼女は泳ぐのがあまり上手ではないと言いますが、ほぼ毎日練習をしています。必ず上手に泳げるようになると思いますよ!
