St. Patrick's Day

A well-known holiday in many western countries is St. Patrick's Day, held on March 17th. It is originally a holiday from Ireland, and is named after Ireland's patron saint, who lived many centuries ago. This holiday makes people think of the color green and of clovers. It is becoming more well known in Japan because there are now often parades held for St. Patrick's Day. In many western countries, everyone is supposed to wear something green on St. Patrick's Day and if you forget to wear green on that day, other people will pinch (つねる) you. Be careful if this tradition ever spreads to Japan. If you forget to wear green on March 17th, or you might get pinched. Ouch!
